Parivartan Training Center's Annual Exhibition 2017

Comprehension - The Foundation of Learning Process

Training and capacity building of teaching and supporting staff is an integral part of Door Step School's journey towards ensuring 'Education for All'. Through Parivartan Training Center, we are able to identify and meet training needs of not only our own staff, but also of teachers and facilitators from other organizations and schools.

As a part of continuous learning and sharing process, Parivartan Training Center organizes an open-to-all exhibition on yearly basis. Topics covered under the exhibition so far include - brain development and types of intelligence, how to make reading a fun activity, what is an ideal classroom, project method of teaching concepts, etc. The topics are presented in two ways - from academic research findings perspective as well as practical implementation and its challenges and solutions.

This is the seventh year of Parivartan's annual exhibition and this time we have focused on the foundation of any learning process, that is Comprehension. We understand that comprehension is an internal process and the speed and level of comprehension differ from person to person, in our case - from child to child. It is important for every teacher to estimate how much of the content children are able to comprehend. We, at Door Step School, have been developing innovative tools for children and teachers to explore this concept from multiple perspectives. This year's exhibition will showcase these concepts and tools about comprehension.

Fun Fair for Children and Parents

Children from migrant families are often seen left out of schools, mainly due to their frequently changing living conditions. We, at Door Step School, try to identify practical difficulties of this section in the society. Different solutions are offered to handle community-specific challenges. It takes considerable time to gain trust of the parents. But once it is achieved, the results are very satisfactory and motivating.

One of our projects focuses on parents' participation in their child's education. We have been working in Baner-Balewadi area with certain groups of migrant families. After repeated visits to their houses and rigorous follow-up meetings, we could convince and help most of the parents in sending their children to schools. But the job is not over just with school admissions. A bigger challenge is to retain the children in schools despite language differences, daily commuting issues, mixed responses from the schools, and such other barriers. We are happy with the results so far in case of these families from Baner-Balewadi area. We decided to arrange a gathering for these people as a follow-up meet on larger scale.

A fun-fair was thus organized on 15th of January 2017, at an open ground in Baner. A small stage was set up for children to dance and play. Door Step School team presented street play on importance of education. Basic sanitation points were discussed with parents and children under WASH activity. All the attendees enjoyed fun activities as well as special snacks items arranged at the fair.

Our team was very well supported by enthusiastic group of volunteers from Wipro, Hinjawadi. They helped us in conducting various activities for parents and children. Local Municipal Corporator Mr. Baburao Chandere and social worker Mr. Lahu Balwadkar helped us in arranging the venue. They visited the fun fair for inauguration.

Around 80 parents and 180 children attended the fun fair. These parents have come to Pune in search of employment, from remote villages in Maharashtra as well as other states like Bihar, Karnataka, and Chhattisgarh. They live around Baner, Balewadi, Pimple Nilakh areas and work on construction sites or other such places on daily wages. The team has been working with them since almost an year now. Most of the children have been enrolled in nearby government schools and all efforts are being taken to retain them there until the families migrate to another location within or outside the city.

From the Streets to the Stage!

You might have seen them at the traffic signals many times, selling something and looking helpless. But you would not recognize them here today. Not just because of change in their attire or the makeup they have put up, but more so because of change in their confidence and happiness, thanks to unexpected opportunity to publicly present their skills.

Door Step School works with a broader objective of 'education for all'. This means we have to understand practical difficulties specific to the children and communities, and find out ways to overcome those. For example, this group of children living under flyovers and selling petty items at traffic signals in the city of Pune. Door Step School is working with these children since last few years and trying to bring them in main stream of formal education. However, the nature of their work and living conditions of their families have always created obstacles in their journey towards education.

Sadhana, Manju, Gauri, and several other children from slums and pavements at Deccan - Pulachi Wadi and Chatushrungi area, Shivajinagar have been enrolled in Pune Municipal Corporation school no.14 and we are trying to retain them there by providing other support services. This year their school, along with other PMC schools in the vicinity, held the annual cultural programme at the very famous Balgandharva Auditorium at Deccan. And our children got an opportunity to participate in performances like dance and drama.

Forget about performing on stage, these children entered the auditorium for the first time in their life. This obviously made them nervous initially. But with the encouragement from their teachers and audience, they performed really well. On behalf of the children, we would like to thank the PMC school for providing them an experience which they will never forget.

Christmas Celebrations at Door Step School

December is usually a happening month in many ways. Lots of events and activities  are conducted for children in Door Step School centers across the city. Some of the children are taken to a nearby park for picnic, while others are busy in planning Diwali / Christmas parties.
At one of the temporary slums in Hadapsar, our children had fun celebrating Christmas. This location is covered by our mobile classroom, the School-on-Wheels bus and some of the children have been enrolled in nearby government school. Children attended party in the bus wearing colourful clothes. They sang songs taught to them in the school and in the class. Highlight of the party was gift distribution by Santa Claus!
We observed children not regular to our classes had come for the party with their siblings and friends. Parents who were reluctant to send their children for the classes, were curiously watching the children having fun in the bus. Events like this help us attract more children and parents towards the classes and eventually to the school.
