Exhibition for educators and parents
Theme: ParentsтАЩ Participation in Children's Education
Organized by Door Step School Foundation

Pune, March 2025 тАУ Door Step School Foundation (DSSF), a pioneering organization committed to literacy and education for children from marginalized and migrant communities, is organizing an exhibition on Parent's Participation in Children's Education from 17th to 22nd March, between 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM, at the Parivartan Training Centre, Annabhau Sathe Primary School, Kumthekar Road, Pune.

For over three decades, DSSF has been working to ensure quality education and literacy for children from underserved backgrounds. The organization focuses on foundational literacy, innovative learning models, and community engagement to bridge the gap between schools and home learning environments. Through initiatives like School on Wheels, Community Learning Centers, and the Parivartan Training Program, DSSF actively collaborates with parents, teachers, and communities to build a strong support system for children's education.

Parental involvement is one of the most significant factors in a childтАЩs continuity and progress in education. DSSF runs a special project on ParentsтАЩ Participation for Children's Education, where the team works on empowering parents by providing them with the right tools and knowledge to support their childrenтАЩs learning at home. Their initiatives include:

  • Awareness and counseling sessions to educate parents on the importance of home based study along with classroom learning.
  • Workshops and hands-on training to equip parents with strategies to support children's studies, even if they are not literate.
  • Providing educational materials, workbooks, and structured activities for effective home learning.
  • Community-based learning support, including Parent Groups and Learning Circles, to foster peer learning.

The Parivartan Training Centre serves as the capacity-building arm of DSSF, offering training to teachers, social workers, and facilitators on effectively engaging parents in education. The centre focuses on training educators, developing learning materials for parents, documenting best practices, to strengthen parent-teacher partnerships.

To highlight these efforts and encourage more parents, teachers, and social workers to engage in children's education, DSSF is organizing the Exhibition on Parent Participation in ChildrenтАЩs Education. The exhibition will showcase methods to support children's studies at home, educational resources, activity workbooks, and an opportunity to engage with practitioners who work closely with parents.

We invite the social organizations, school teachers and educators, media, and the public to visit the exhibition and participate in meaningful discussions on enhancing parental engagement in education.

The DSSF Exhibition: A Journey of Learning, Expression and Comprehension

At Door Step School Foundation, learning goes beyond textbooks! Our Annual Exhibition, organised by the Parivartan Training Centre, provides a platform for educators and learners to explore meaningful themes that shape the way we teach and understand childrenтАЩs education.

Over the years, the exhibition has covered topics like multiple intelligences, comprehension, and expression, each designed to enhance the understanding of how children learn, process information, and communicate. Through interactive displays, models, and engaging activities, visitorsтАФincluding teachers, trainers, education officials, and studentsтАФget a chance to experience innovative teaching methodologies firsthand.

ЁЯФ╣ Why is this exhibition important?
Traditional learning often lacks space for experiential learning, creative expression, and in-depth comprehension. These exhibitions create an opportunity to:
тЬЕ Enhance teaching practices by introducing innovative methodologies.
тЬЕ Make learning visible through hands-on exhibits.
тЬЕ Encourage meaningful communication between educators and children.
тЬЕ Create awareness about how comprehension, emotions, and expression influence learning.

Through each edition, the exhibition has received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with appreciation for the child-friendly, practical, and thought-provoking approach. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, this initiative continues to empower teachers and enrich childrenтАЩs learning experiences.

In this week's Weekly Reading Circle at Door Step School Foundation, we read and engage with the paper "Emergent Literacy (рдЕрдВрдХреБрд░рд┐рдд рд╕рд╛рдХреНрд╖рд░рддрд╛)" by  Shuchi Sinha, Akhila Pydah and Shailaja Menon.

This Practitioner Brief is part of a series brought out by the Early Literacy Initiative anchored by the Azim Premji School of Education at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Hyderabad.

The discussion following the article reading focused on key questions and ideas, including:

  1. What is emergent literacy, and how does it differ from other literacy approaches?

  2. How can different perspectives on emergent literacy support children's learning processes?

  3. How do structured teaching methods sometimes hinder children's learning, and how does emergent literacy, which allows children to learn through their own experiences, provide a more effective alternative?

  4. How can we better understand children's learning processes and design tools and structures that align with their natural development?

Beyond the School on Wheels: Addressing the Bigger Picture in Education

ЁЯЪН Beyond the School on Wheels: Addressing the Bigger Picture in Education

The School on Wheels is a lifeline for children from marginalized and migrant communities, offering education in the face of frequent migration, economic challenges, and systemic exclusion. While it meets the immediate needs of children by bringing learning to their doorstep, it also highlights the larger, unanswered questions in education.

How do we create systems that not only teach but also integrate communities, build safe spaces, and provide resources like libraries and community centers? How do we ensure these children donтАЩt just catch up temporarily but become a part of a sustainable, inclusive educational framework?

Programs like the School on Wheels cater to urgent, specific needs but also remind us that temporary solutions alone cannot replace the systemic change required to address deeper inequities. The journey toward equitable education must include long-term efforts to empower communities, create safe learning environments, and establish pathways to formal schooling.

ЁЯТб The School on Wheels is a step forward, but the work to build a truly inclusive education system continues.

Education for Every Child: Bridging Gaps, Building Futures

ЁЯЪН Education for Every Child: Bridging Gaps, Building Futures

For children in marginalized and migrant communities, accessing formal education is often an uphill battle. Frequent migration, driven by unorganized livelihoods and social exclusion, along with cultural norms and systemic barriers, leads to a disintegration of community ties. This exclusion profoundly affects children, keeping them distant from formal schooling.

While policies like the Right to Education (RTE) aim to address inequities, the realities of frequent displacement, economic hardships, and cultural challenges mean that many children remain outside the reach of conventional systems.

This is where non-formal and alternative education programs like the School on Wheels play a crucial role. By adapting to the unique realities of these communities, such initiatives ensure education doesnтАЩt wait for systems to change but instead meets children where they are.

The School on Wheels reflects the belief that every child deserves a chance to learn, grow, and dreamтАФno matter how complex their circumstances. ItтАЩs a reminder that inclusive, flexible approaches are key to creating a more equitable future for all.

ЁЯТЩ Together, letтАЩs ensure no child is left behind.

School on Wheels: A Lifeline That Remains Essential

ЁЯЪН The School on Wheels: A Lifeline That Remains Essential

The School on Wheels (SOW) by Door Step School Foundation was designed as a temporary solution to bring education to children from marginalized and migrant communities. Yet, despite advancements and increasing access to education, its relevance remains undiminished.

Barriers like inaccessible schools, economic hardships, frequent migration, and linguistic challenges persist, leaving many children without opportunities to learn. SOW steps in as a lifeline, reaching children in remote areas, temporary settlements, and underserved communitiesтАФplaces where traditional solutions often fall short.

This initiative provides more than just foundational skills. It builds trust in education, fosters curiosity, and offers children a glimpse of a brighter future. It stands as a testament to the power of innovative, flexible approaches in bridging gaps and ensuring education reaches those who need it most.

The School on Wheels reminds us that even in a world of progress, there are children who still struggle to access their right to learn. Until every child has an equal chance at education, programs like SOW remain vital and transformative.
