Weekly Reading Circle - 11

In this Saturday's Weekly Reading Circle, we will be reading the article "शिक्षा दर्शन, जरूरत और अर्थ" written by Rohit Dhankar.

Rohit is the Founder - Secretary of a Jaipur-based NGO, Digantar, and has been training government schoolteachers across different states in India.

The discussion post reading the article centered around questions and key ideas like:

  1. The focus of the discussion was to understand why education is needed.
  2. What do we understand by Education?
  3. When we talk about education, what fundamental questions should we ask? Need of education, why educate, aims of education, what to learn, how to learn, etc.

Beyond the School on Wheels: Addressing the Bigger Picture in Education

🚍 Beyond the School on Wheels: Addressing the Bigger Picture in Education

The School on Wheels is a lifeline for children from marginalized and migrant communities, offering education in the face of frequent migration, economic challenges, and systemic exclusion. While it meets the immediate needs of children by bringing learning to their doorstep, it also highlights the larger, unanswered questions in education.

How do we create systems that not only teach but also integrate communities, build safe spaces, and provide resources like libraries and community centers? How do we ensure these children don’t just catch up temporarily but become a part of a sustainable, inclusive educational framework?

Programs like the School on Wheels cater to urgent, specific needs but also remind us that temporary solutions alone cannot replace the systemic change required to address deeper inequities. The journey toward equitable education must include long-term efforts to empower communities, create safe learning environments, and establish pathways to formal schooling.

💡 The School on Wheels is a step forward, but the work to build a truly inclusive education system continues.

Education for Every Child: Bridging Gaps, Building Futures

🚍 Education for Every Child: Bridging Gaps, Building Futures

For children in marginalized and migrant communities, accessing formal education is often an uphill battle. Frequent migration, driven by unorganized livelihoods and social exclusion, along with cultural norms and systemic barriers, leads to a disintegration of community ties. This exclusion profoundly affects children, keeping them distant from formal schooling.

While policies like the Right to Education (RTE) aim to address inequities, the realities of frequent displacement, economic hardships, and cultural challenges mean that many children remain outside the reach of conventional systems.

This is where non-formal and alternative education programs like the School on Wheels play a crucial role. By adapting to the unique realities of these communities, such initiatives ensure education doesn’t wait for systems to change but instead meets children where they are.

The School on Wheels reflects the belief that every child deserves a chance to learn, grow, and dream—no matter how complex their circumstances. It’s a reminder that inclusive, flexible approaches are key to creating a more equitable future for all.

💙 Together, let’s ensure no child is left behind.

School on Wheels: A Lifeline That Remains Essential

🚍 The School on Wheels: A Lifeline That Remains Essential

The School on Wheels (SOW) by Door Step School Foundation was designed as a temporary solution to bring education to children from marginalized and migrant communities. Yet, despite advancements and increasing access to education, its relevance remains undiminished.

Barriers like inaccessible schools, economic hardships, frequent migration, and linguistic challenges persist, leaving many children without opportunities to learn. SOW steps in as a lifeline, reaching children in remote areas, temporary settlements, and underserved communities—places where traditional solutions often fall short.

This initiative provides more than just foundational skills. It builds trust in education, fosters curiosity, and offers children a glimpse of a brighter future. It stands as a testament to the power of innovative, flexible approaches in bridging gaps and ensuring education reaches those who need it most.

The School on Wheels reminds us that even in a world of progress, there are children who still struggle to access their right to learn. Until every child has an equal chance at education, programs like SOW remain vital and transformative.

Shivani, an educationist based in Bhopal, runs Muskaan, an NGO that works with children and young individuals from marginalized communities through education.

The discussion post reading the article centered around questions and key ideas like:

1. Different Aims of education, such as for literacy, to remove different fears of parents, children, communities, to have a choice and control of choices, etc.

2. What kind of discrimination do children from the margins face in the classroom and schools? Some experiences were shared.

3. What expectations do parents and children from the margins have from education?
